THE HOT AND NOT
LIST - Year 2000 Flashback
Some of the stuff that
caught my attention this year...
Le Mec:
Hotlist
- Even though the charts are filled with
kiddie bands and one pile of crap after another, I think the past year has shown that
there's still hope for music after all. And
by this I mean serious music. It's a real shame to watch when big rock acts like Smashing
Pumpkins throw in the towel in frustration with how the world turns, but it's a given fact
that no matter what there will always be another great band. And even though they're not
surfacing at the speed they did in the mid ´90's, there's still plenty to keep serious
music fans busy. So don't lose hope out there - there's still plenty for us to embrace...
- ...on the other hand, many bands also
need to realise that the world has changed and that new
sounds and technology are part of the agenda if you want to make a
difference. Garbage were one of the first rock bands to really understand this - Oasis
still need to hear their alarm clock!
- Return of some of the old great ones: U2, Sade, Duran Duran, The Cure. They all
proved that they are still to be counted on.
- And a lot of new discoveries: Travis, Chicane, Transister, Coldplay.
All bands with huge potential, some even stars by now.
- I got a taste for dance and trance music - without losing my passion for
other genres. An effort to want to discover the genre really payed off and now it's got
its own place in my music world.
- Napster
made an appearance in my world. The process of dealing with how much to use/abuse it
actually came fairly easy. It's great for getting single songs by otherwise useless bands,
but when it comes to full albums, it'll never compete with actually owning the cd with
cover art etc. Other than this, my opinion about Napster and electronic music sharing can
be found in an earlier Hotlist from September 10th 2000.
Notlist
- The rollercoaster
of fame is in many ways pretty cruel. The slide towards oblivion can be
every bit as painful as the climb to the top is purely magnificent. However, some bands
just don't seem to possess a sense of reality. Take Oasis,
for instance. It's been more than three years since they've released any music of a real
quality and still they behave like the world is still their oyster. Well, lads, screaming
in the media doesn't cut it alone and it is starting to look more and more like a band
trying to shout louder and louder while standing up to their necks in quicksand. The
inevitable is bound to happen...
- The latin
fever certainly made its entrance. However, while there was some genuine
star quality amongst them, most of the artists riding the wave were simply using it as a
means to kickstart a more or less uninteresting career. And what's up with Whitney Houston
trying it on with Enrique Iglesias. Man, I'm really starting to lose patience with that
broad...!
- The
Smashing Pumpkins decided to call it quits. Them being one of the few
bands still fighting in the name of rock, they're leaving a big hole behind...
- Radiohead
decided to fool around with their stack of computers. Do it on your own time! Fortunately,
they'll soon have another album out. Hopes are high...
- R&B
and soul pop became the norm in the charts.
- All the decent Danish music magazines croking from extra taxes.
- Rock music
not knowing how to deal with the dominance of electronic music.
....and speaking of the
year 2000, here's...
