THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of October 31st 2003

- The
Strokes: "Room On Fire". Well, every review I've read so far has
been on the break of sexual climax. Yes, that good. So, obviously, I had some
pretty high expectations popping it into my cd player. The first couple of times playing
it left an impression of a fine album but no classic, pretty much the same feeling I had
with their brilliant debut "Is This It". However, my impression of the album has
changed drastically now that it's been in the player for the last couple of days.
Basically, it boils down to this: If you were wild about their first album, you're gonna
be just as thrilled about this one. And if you're having a hard time understanding the
hype around The Strokes, this album will not change that. Since I belong to the first
category, I know that the album is already ensured a spot on the top 10 list for 2003.
It's brutal guitar pop with a swagger and an immaculate 33-minute collection of songs.
- Kruder
& Dorfmeister: "The K&M Sessions". This album is a
couple of years old and consists of the best remixes of other people's songs done by
K&M. However, the two Austrians have taken the originals and put their special
fingerprint on them on what must be one of the best down-tempo chill-out albums out there.
If you like Moby's more quiet moments, you're gonna love this album and should already be
out the door on the way to your record pusher!
- Gemma
Hayes: "Night On My Side". Critically acclaimed debut album from
2002, this is a real treat if you get off on something somewhere between Sheryl Crow,
Sarah
McLachlan, Kristin Hersh and Cat Power. Singer-songwriter with a few noisy guitars thrown
in every now and then.
- Paul Van
Dyk: "Reflections". Car ad music deluxe. If you think kindly of
the cross-over between trance and pop and easily slip away into a different mental
dimension whenver you see those car ads with perfectly crafted music, then this cd will
fit perfectly in your collection. Also, if you have a old car for sale - not matter how
crap it is, make sure to leave this cd in the cd player when possible buyers go for a test
drive. Shouldn't take long to get rid of it then...
- The current MTV hit rotating in my head
is Lumidee feat. Busta Rhymes - "Never
Leave You (Uh Ooh)". Another example of how rap can be very melodic and less
ball-bustin'. Speaking of hits, I'm sure the new Sugababes
single "Hole In My Head" will do well. An impressive pop song!
- I watched the brilliant movie "Magnolia" again recently and was blown away and
really happy about how good the movie/music coctail can be when done right. The effect of
the movie plot and Aimee Mann's songs is simply amazing and the scene where all the main
characters sing along to "Wise Up" is out of this world.
- Dicte:
"Gone To Texas". For the Danish audience out there, I just wanted to mention the
latest, fine album from funky singer-songwriter Dicte, who somehow manages to use all the
conventional instruments and effects yet create her very own musical universe.
Notlist
- Bon Jovi. I simply cannot fathom that
anyone serisouly still listens to Bon Jovi and gets a kick out of it. Their American
mainstream hard rock went out of fashion just about ten years ago and nothing has changed
when Jon Bon Jovi sings in his quite annoying voice by now about.....well...stuff...about
living on prayers and keeping the faith...in what I don't know. Anyway, they have a new
album out, called something like "My left foot is kicking my right foot which then
hits the wrong guitar pedal".
- Mariah
Carey's cover of Def Leppard classic "Bringing On The
Heartbreak". This is a real ugly one and my jaw simply hit the floor when I listened
to it. Damn, this is so bad that, despite the royalties, even Def Leppard must be puking
their guts out.
