THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of November 30th 2003
Le Mec:
Hotlist
- Kylie
Minogue: "Body Language". Fine electronic porn pop from our own
little bum princess. It may just be pop music but it sure hits the right spot and slowly
makes your feet move. She's still very relevant and a treasured star on the pop scene.
- Basement
Jaxx: "Kish Kash". Motherfunking grooves from the UK's finest
dance craftsmen. "Good Luck" has to be one of the best "attitude"
songs of the year.
- Pet Shop Boys: "PopArt" CD and DVD.
Well, if you haven't already got a best of compilation from PSB, then this is the one to
get. Two cds filled with all their classic hit singles. What's even better, the DVD
contains no less than 40 videos!! Talk about value for money. Simply a monumental
testimony of some of the best pop music of the
last two decades.
- Tosca.
Downbeat chill-out act derived from the masters Kruder and Dorfmeister. This is simply
some of the coolest music to put on if you want to chill. Even if you don't know much
about the genre, if you're into melodic and soothing sounds, this is right up your alley.
- George Michael is back with a new album -
"Patience" - early next year. Well, eight years after "Older" I guess
the title is more than appropriate...
- Fiona Apple is also finally putting the last
touches on her third release of presumably great dark pop songs. Updated info about Fiona
at www.fionahaswings.com.
- Chris Rock
hosting the MTV Music Video Awards. What a relief to see an American comedian who doesn't
feel bound by the strings of censurship. He was in your face with direct comments and
jokes about all the things people are hesitant to speak of in the business. All about R.
Kelly's taste for underage girls, 50 Cents's taste for guns and gangsta moves...all that
stuff - without wrapping!
Notlist
- Suede have split up. For any indie head out
there, this is sad news. They may not have been at the height of their career on the last
two albums but they do leave a large void on indie scene. Anyway, I'm sure Brett Anderson
will be back - hopefully in a less cheerful format so that we can get more of that twisted
loud indie pop!
- The latest Madonna/Britney
Spears collaboration. Very poor and overrated indeed. Much better apart.
Enough said.
- American
music awards shows. Been watching a couple of them lately, and I'm sorry
to say this: God, there's a lot of boring music in the US! Compared to the European
equivalents (which are not that great either), the US shows are just packed with boring
mainstream country, nu-metal-hip-hop or MOR rock. The lack of anything really exciting
comes across really strong!
- The low
quality of music bought legally on the Internet. I must admit that I have
a hard time seeing the business model for music sold via the Internet. At least in its
present form. If it is seriously going to be an alternative to actually getting the cd,
the ONE thing - besides price - that cannot be inferior is the QUALITY. At the moment, if
you're buying online music, you're getting a quality far inferior to normal cd sound. I
mean, a song in high cd quality will have a size of at least 40 mb in data size, so when
you're getting that same song in a 6-8 mb version, it takes little effort to understand
that some sonic elements must be lost. Often, what you'll be missing in the sound is bass
and dynamics. Anyway, I don't want to get technical or anything - because I don't really
know that much about the technical stuff - I'm just saying that if you don't get the same
quality you can get on cd, it's not going to be an alternative to serious music fans who
actually have a stereo instead of crap computer speakers.
