The Hotlist What's hot right now!

THE HOT AND NOT LIST as of March 30th 1999

Le Mec:

Hotlist

  • Duran Duran: "Strange Behaviour". This double cd with all their 12" mixes is really a treat if you're a leftover from the '80's. If you were ever into the music of this past decade, this cd is a must in more ways than one! Rumours have it that a B-Sides album can be expected sometime in the future too. Thank you - not all record company greed is for the worst.
  • I join Jordan in saluting Placebo's latest album. Give it a few hours on the stereo and you're lost to Brian Molko's strange and bittersweet universe.
  • Lisa Loeb: "Firecracker". A small jewel this one. Just as good as her first.
  • Nuno: "Schizophonic". A very overlooked album from 1996 by ex-Extreme guitarist Nuno. Very varied and better than his original band. Much like Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora.
  • The following brilliant artists will be releasing new albums within the next couple of months: Suede, Live, Pet Shop Boys. Yep, it's springtime and I already know the music that will form the soundtrack for it.

Notlist

  • Seal: "Human Being". Disappointing. It seems like the world has left Seal behind in a state with poorer melodies and weaker arrangements. Mind you, Seal always keeps a certain level of quality in his music - better than the average pop/soul star.
  • Boy, have you looked at the charts these days? I know that the charts are not the best place to look for good music, but one can hope for a minimum of quality. But no...
  • Have I ever said that I dislike Danish song-mama's like Hanne Boel, Sanne Salomonsen, Anne Linnet and Lis Sørensen? Well, I do. Their music is the same over and over again and extremely dull. Especially if you have to listen to it...! (to anyone outside Denmark, think Bonnie Tyler, Céline Dion,  and you'll know what I mean).
  • Grunge. I can't help thinking that even though a lot of good music came out of the first part of this decade, much of the grunge scene/music sounds strangely dull and pitiful these days. Obvious exceptions are Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden even though not all their work has stood the test of time.

Morten Jordan:

Hotlist

  • Grant Lee Buffalo's "Jubilee". They have never been modern or trendy but always had a very high standard of songwriting. Their latest album is perhaps not as raw and beautiful as the first ones, but it is full of great rock music that will never be outdated.
  • Sebadoh: "The Sebadoh". This album is getting 20% better each time I hear it. And I intend to hear it a lot.

Notlist

  • Maybe I am repeating myself, but I am sick and tired of how easy it is to get a record deal, television coverage etc., when you ridicule yourself, disregard any artistic ambitions you might have and copy a proven EuroPop concept from the record business. And here I am especially thinking of all the Aqua-clones. In my eyes, their only achevement is that they have managed to be even more pathetic that their idols. Way to go!
  • Bob hund. Their new album is somewhat of a dissapointment, when you consider what great songs they have made in the past. I hope my opinion will change when I have heard it more closely, but so far I am turned off by the fact that many of the songs seems to be built around an annoying Batman-like rhythm.
