THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of September 29th 2001
Le Mec:
Hotlist
- Saint
Etienne: "Smash The System". A brand new, massive 34-track
double cd best of compilation with all the best this band had to offer throughout the
'90's. Put together, it's amazing they didn't sell more than they did. I guess they were
just a little bit too experimental and kitch for the mainstream charts. But if you
consider yourself a fan of great pop music, there's no way around this band. And this
compilation offers a great place to start.
- Gorillaz:
"19-2000". They've been in the charts for a while now but I haven't really
thought too much of them so far. I definitely see their qualities but I've missed truly
great melodies in their music. Until this brilliant song came along. It may not be
immediately approachable but once it sticks in your head it stays there for weeks. A
brilliant pop song! And far better than what Blur have had to offer lately...
- Baby Bird:
"Dying Happy". Strange 1997 solo album from the singer of pop band Babybird. The
album mainly consist of moods and atmospheres rather than actual songs but in the hours of
the night this music sets an incredible scene for soul searching or just simply getting
pissed all by yourself.
- Elton John
getting back to the way he sounded in the '70's. It's still a fact that the man has been
in the business a least five years too long but seeing him going back to when he was
actually pretty good is a positive development.
- The
Charlatans and Gay Dad. New
music from two British rock bands with a sexual and funky twist to their music. Forget
Oasis and Blur - this is the way forward!
Notlist
- I wasn't going to mention he tragedy on
September 11th. However, when it comes to music and entertainment, I find it rather
unnecessary that US radio stations (and
Danish radio as well) have chosen to blacklist a long list of songs simply because they
are "inappropriate" to be played on the radio. People ought to be clever enough
to separate things and when you look at the list of songs it's hard to find any reason for
most of them. A few examples: Elton John: "Rocket Man", Bangles: "Walk Like
An Egyptian", Beatles: "A Day In The Life", U2: "Sunday Bloody
Sunday", Kansas: "Dust In The Wind". Danish radio also: Leonard Cohen:
"First We Take Manhattan", Roxette: "Crash Boom Bang", Randy Crawford:
"One Day I'll Fly Away". Anyway, take a look at the list below and judge for
yourself...

- Simple
Minds: "Neon Lights". They are already very much in the autumn
of their career and making an album full of cover versions is not the way to turn this
around. I was hoping for a new Simple Minds album instead so I'm a bit disappointed.
- Michael
Jackson anno 2001. That he's still being hailed as the king of pop is
simply ridiculous. The man hasn't renewed himself and still sounds like he did ten years
ago. The royal title as king taken into consideration that's rather disappointing and
should make his throne crumble. Furthermore, the fact that Danish television finds the
release of the video for "You Rock My World" important enough to show parts of
it on the news is also totally out of proportion. As far as pop music goes, you can do
much better.
- Britpop
1998-2001. Looking back, it's really overwhelming to think about the
number of bands imitating the sound of the really big britpop era of 1994-1997. The last
three years really spawned an incredible amount of has-beens even before their career
started. It's a shame that whenever a certain sound or genre becomes successful, it has to
be milked and draged on for years after its death.
- Posh &
Becks (alias Victoria and David Beckham) reacting very seriously to how
the British media are stalking them and looking for even the smallest thing to write
about. My guess is that if they would just lighten up and take more of it with a smile
things wouldn't be as bad. They should just realise that people are envious bastards and
move on! The worst thing you can do with the British media is letting them get to you.
That's when the real trouble begins. Taking the piss has always been a fairly steady
strategy when it comes to public life.
