The Hotlist

THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of June 29th 2003
Le Mec:
Hotlist
- Big Brovaz:
"Nu-Flow". This one's really surprised me. This is uttterly funky stuff with
loads of melodic brother rap and heavenly sister harmonies. I was completely sold
already the first time I heard it - and glad that there still seems to be a future for
melodic fusion of rap and pop...
- Liz Phair:
"Liz Phair". Fourth album from one of America's finest female pop
singer-songwriters. Heavily related to Sheryl Crow, this may
even be the easiest entry to her music if you don't know Liz Phair. It's definitely her
poppiest yet.
- The Donnas:
"Who Invited You". Great kick-ass punk rock in the same alley as The Strokes
with a heavy debt to ´70's punk. No frills whatsoever, it's just 1-2-3 play and then
a lot of attitude.
- Damn. Don't you just hate it when you're
wrong. Well, after listening to it over and over again for a couple of days, I have to
admit that Avril Lavigne's "Let
Go" is actually a
pretty fucking great album. Having been bored stiff by Alanis Morissette's last couple of
albums and all the wannabes that followed in her footsteps, I feel funny suddenly falling
for at teenager trying to be her all over again. Hmm....maybe I'm just not supposed to get
this...
- Mylène
Farmer, French pop queen, has a pretty amazing and artistic production of
music videos under her belt. Just acquired them all on DVD and it's really great stuff to
watch. By the way, the music's great too...
- David
Paich from Toto changing sex
and name to Davida. Now, finally some entertaining news from the world of music. I know
it's a dead serious issue to him but it still cracks me up...I wonder when Meat Loaf will
follow...
Notlist
- Metallica: "St. Anger". I'm
not a big Metallica fan as it is but the new, harder musical direction convinces me that
the world doesn't necessarily need Metallica back in the
ring.
- Even though it's been out for more than two weeks now, I still haven't made an attempt
at the new Radiohead
album. I've read a lot about it, but maybe the two previous disappointments have scared me
off a little. I'm sure I'll get around to it but priorities are just a little
different at the moment. When I do, I'm hoping for a big positive surprise...
- Kate Ryan's less than great attempts to
take old Mylène Farmer classics and making them hits all over again. No matter where
you're from, "Libertine" and "Désenchantée"
are still much better in their original form.
