I know I'm kinda late, but I have to express my impression by R.E.M.
and their latest "Up". They have actually managed to make an album it took me
several days to remove from my CD player. In this world of so much great music that's an
achievement in itself. Cheers, Mike & Co.!
Finding two hard-to-get albums by The Watchmen
second hand at a low price. Who said quality doesn't come cheap!?
The way George Michael has cunningly
managed to turn his embarrasing public toilet incident into a boost for his career.
Madonna couldn't have done it any better.
Cher: "Believe". Well, what do
you know. Out of nowhere, Cher comes with this really great single - her best for ages. I
especially like the way the vocals are produced (twisted through all kinds of machinery -
the bits sounding like 2Pac's "California Love" are awesome). Mind you, I doubt
that her entire album maintains this high standard.
The Beatles: "Real Love". This
new old Lennon song from the Anthology 2 album just holds so much emotion and atmosphere.
And when thinking of Lennon's death at the same time, I'm just ready for therapy....!
I want to point your attention towards a new album by Juliana
Hatfield (former half-member of The Lemonheads). It's called
"Bed". She is one of the many underappreciated artists around.
Also, Duran Duran are out with their
"Greatest" album containing 19 of their best singles. It's great stuff even
though the album doesn't bring anything new to the world. The better news, however, is
that Duran are in the studio working hard on their next album "Hallucinating
Elvis" due for release sometime in the spring.
U2's "Sweetest Thing" video.
Very nice, simple and humoristic - a fine alternative to all the fast and boombastic
videos that seem to have become the norm today.
In a previous Notlist I was giving Natalie Imbruglia's
album "Left Of The Middle" a hard time. I have to eat some of those words again
since listening to it a little more has left me with a much better impression of the
album. It is, after all, a pretty decent pop album with many fine songs. Sorry, Natalie...
Notlist
- The recent record fair I visited was a
major disappointment. It seemed like vinyl is on its way back in since the amount of
records clearly succeeded the amount of CD's where my interest lies. The next fair is on
May 22nd next year, so let's hope for something better then.
- Emilia: "Big Big World". This
little girl's song gets on my nerves.
- Live albums. I've never been a great fan
of live recordings since I think the music loses atmosphere and the little details.
However, good live performances do give the music an energy injection and are pretty okay
on special occasions. Like when you're cleaning......Check out Simple Minds' "Live In
The City Of Light" from 1987.
- I've had a few problems with the move of this website. However, they seem to have been
solved and within the next week or so I should be moving into my new home.

- There ain't so much hot in the music biz going on right now - at least, I can't
think of nothing.
Notlist
- The reunion of Culture Club - what's
wrong with the world today?
- MTV Europe Awards: terrible hostess (Jenny
McCarthy), wrong winners, bad show ... and I could go on.
- Michael Stipe from R.E.M. wore eyeliner at
the MTV Europe awards - yark!!!
- It's X-Mas time, so it's automatically also time for every artist's "Greatest Hits" compilation. The worst kind are the
ones that are re-released only with a new cover, just to make people believe that this is
a new compilation which in fact it ain't.
- X-Mas music sucks (except Wham's classic
"Last Christmas").

- Stereo Studio has started a shop in
Vejle where I live. This means: a broader selection of CD's, better prices, more price
competition in general, more special offers, and best of all: the first INDIE CD section
in a shop in Vejle!!
- Eve 6 with the single "Inside
Out". A young band that plays melodic college style rock, a bit similar to early
Better Than Ezra. Watch them closely!
- Low Fidelity All-stars. This band is
praised to the skies among music business insiders in UK presently. So far I have found
their music a bit to electronic and dance-oriented, but the song "Battleflag"
might change my opinion.
Notlist
- The vast quantities of horrible Christmas songs
that the radio is going to spill on us during the next month. It's just like Christian
music. People will tolerate anything as long as the content fits some general idea, and
quality is not even a subject. (To avoid suffocating I can recommend Nirvana at high
volume. It usually does the trick.)
- My brother wants his speakers back.
