THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of September 25th 2002
Le Mec:
Hotlist
- Coldplay:
"A Rush Of Blood To The Head". I must admit that the last year or so has been so
filled with Coldplay clones that I've lost some of the love for the mellow melancholic
sound they represent. However, now that the originals are back it's easy to hear where it
all started. The new album's great - though I still prefer "Parashutes" - and
the clones better listen and learn. The real thing once again beats the copycats.
- Saint Etienne:
"Finisterre". I'm very ready for another round of intelligent and soft pop
music. Saint Etienne albums always arrive without much attention in mass media but in my
world it's always a major occasion.
- Suede:
"A New Morning". The new album is out September 30th and the first reviews have
been good but not great. Apparently, it's very Suede and just more of what they do best.
But for anyone who adores what they've done in the past, this will be way enough anyway...
- Bryan
Ferry: "Frantic". The new album from Mr. Cool is just as classic as
anything he's done before. It does, however, require more than just a few listenings to
sink in. But when it does, it dawns on you that the man has made his best album in a very
long time.
- Aimee Mann: "Lost In Space". More
personal and intense songs from this very fine American singer-songwriter pop princess.
- INXS
re-issues. If you're into INXS, then this could be good news. Four of their classic albums
will be re-issued with bonus tracks. Also, there's a new double cd compilation on the way
with everything that ever smelled like a hit on it.
- Juliana Hatfield
is keeping busy with a new band called Some Girls. Also, she's currently on tour with
Aimee Mann in the US. I'll be going to the US in October and will be missing her by just
one day at her gig in Boston. Damn!
Notlist
- Starsailor's James Walsh putting on the tough guy act. He's a softy and
won't get away with acting otherwise.
- Internal troubles in the Blur
camp. Looks like they may be losing their guitar player - an important part of their
identity. It's been a while since I found Blur really interesting but the departure of
Graham Coxon is bound to result in a different musical direction. I wonder if it'll be for
the better...
- Avril Lavigne.
Too young (17) to be taken seriously. Her age just can't carry her attitude...and the
Alanis Morissette thing has been done to death.
- The The remasters.
Some hotlists ago I praised the release of the classic The The albums in remastered
editions with bonus tracks. It turns out that no bonus stuff was eventually included. In
fact, one of the albums contains less music than the original cd release. A missed
opportunity, if you ask me. There were plenty of great b-sides etc. to choose from...
- Got no time for the lesser
part of pop/rock music. Used to make an effort to keep in touch with a
wide area of the music scene. With the deterioration of both quality and intelligence in
large parts of the scene, my motivation to keep up has just vanished. And in periods where
the time available for music discovery is short, focusing on the key artists in my music
universe just seems most important.
