THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of May 24th 2003
Le Mec:
Hotlist
- Suede live in Denmark. A special concert filled
with B-sides and album tracks, more or less leaving out the hits. If you're more or less
familiar with all Suede recordings, this
kind of show is quite a treat and rare occasion.
- The Dandy Warhols:
"Welcome To The Monkey House". A welcome return to the music scene of that
speciel Dandy ingredient. This is quite simply wicked boogie woogie
pop music with a swagger.
- Live: "Birds
Of Pray". To me it's always good news when Live release a new album. However, their
latest couple of albums have only just been able to handle the pressure
and live up to expectations. This new one is a step forward again and definitely better
than the somewhat disappointing "V". However, if you're new to Live, you're
still better
off going for either "Throwing Coppper" or "Secret Samadhi".
- Suzanne Vega: "Retrospective". A
great new best of compilation from this all time fantastic pop singer-songwriter. Go get.
- "Boogie Nights" soundtrack.
Watched the film - great by the way - and was amazed about they've managed to pull every
great '70's song out of the decade and put it in this
movie. The soundtrack could be the only '70's compilation you'll ever need.
- Avril Lavigne: "I'm With You".
Even though I find her pretty annoying, I must admit that this is simply a brilliant
ballad.
- The magical year of 1991.
This was not only the year of Nirvana and to some the rebirth of music. When I look at
many of my favourite artists, it just seems like this was the
year they released some of their best work. 1991 stands as probably the greatest music
year of the last three decades. 1997 is another personal
favourite.
- I've been slimming down my cd collection.
Just don't have time for inferior music anymore, so the crap's got to go. I guess anyone
should be able to get by with a maximum of 100 cd's at any given time. So trim your cd
collection for focus. Of course, for collectors this is rarely an option...I still count
myself one.
Notlist
- Mansun
splitting up. Although they never reached the magic of their debut "Attack Of The
Grey Lantern" on their following albums, it's still sad to see them go.
- Madonna. Losing big parts of the goodwill
built on her last two albums. Hearing her new music, I'm just not ready for another
Madonna-packed period. And with the fuzz
about her movie "Swept Away" this has Madonna overexposure written all over it.
- Blur. This is no longer music I care to
spend time on. Boring and just not worth the effort.
- Melanie C: "Reason". This second
album from the most respectable Spice Girl just strikes me as much weaker than her rather
fine debut. It seems too poppy and polished without the rock and trance elements giving
her debut and edge and the element of surprise.
- Big concerts....I prefer smaller more
intimate venues where the magic of a live show really comes alive. So needless to say that
I won't be participating much in the upcoming festival season.
