THE HOT AND NOT LIST as of May 23rd 1999

Hotlist

  • Suede: "Head Music". It took me longer this time to find the passion for this Suede album, but eventually I had to let down my guard and give in. It's yet another fine performance from one of the best bands ever to come out of England. A little less commercial than "Coming Up" but still good for probably 4 or 5 singles. My initial guess would be: "Everything Will Flow", "Down", "She's In Fashion", and maybe "He's Gone" or "Can't Get Enough". But what the hell is "Elephant Man" doing on the album!? Should've been tucked away as a B-side.
  • In a week's time I'll be going to my first concert ever with Del Amitri. Expectations are high... Also, I just got hold of a 4-CD bootleg containing all their hard-to-come-by B-sides.
  • Space Monkeys: "The Daddy Of Them All" (1996). Fine little band from Manchester, England. Borrows style and attitude from Mansun and Oasis.
  • Pearl Jam: "Ten". Yep, this great album is once again rotating in my disc player. And doing it in such a persistant manner that it has entered the Top 50 Album List. Within the grunge scene I find it a more complete album that Nirvana's "Nevermind".

Notlist

  • The remaining members of Queen seriously considering regrouping with a new lead singer. And George Michael being a potential pick. I say, let dead dogs lie and move on. It will only be a failure since no one will ever replace the voice of Freddie Mercury. Not even George Michael. And I have a hard time imagining GM's light voice and Queen's somewhat dated rock formula together.
  • The way the summer will once again offer far too many one-day festivals of poor quality. I mean, every little town's got one these days!
  • Metallica's rendition of the old Thin Lizzy classic "Whisky In The Jar". They took it and made it their own - but in the process stripped it of the soul and special atmosphere of the original. There are limits to what Metallica can get away with.
