THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of October 21st 2001

- Garbage will be playing a few exclusive live
shows around Europe in connection with their new album. The good news is they're also
playing Denmark and the great news is that I'm going to see them. So that's definitely
going to be a highlight in November.
- The Smashing Pumpkins are releasing a greatest
hits compilation next month. That's nothing special in itself since it is the season for a
ridiculous amount of compilation albums...The great thing about it is that it will contain
a bonus disc with many previously unavailable tracks.
- Kylie
Minogue: "Can't Get You Out Of My Head". It may just be silly
dance pop but she does it so well that most of the younger breed have to try hard to keep
up. Go Kylie!
- Natalie
Imbruglia has a great new album - "White Lilies Island" - out
November 5th. It has a more mature tone but is still very much her style. I foresee a hit.
- Danish pop princess Marie Frank has a new album called "Vermilion"
out. Her first album was a major success, also with great reviews in UK magazine Q, and
this follow-up has the potential to do just as well.
- Lenny
Kravitz. Even though he may no longer be the dish of the day chart-wise,
he's still too good to be forgotten. Has a new album out October 29th ("Lenny").
Should provide us with a least a couple of funky tunes for the dark season.
- Although he is largely an old fart, Elton John still knows his way around the game of stardom.
He definitely stands for the comment of the month: "What's the strangest thing I've
put in my mouth? A clitoris". Jolly good one...
Notlist
- The UK music press has totally hyped
newcomers Starsailor over the past six
months. Now their debut album "Love Is Here" is out and even though it's a good
record (if you like Travis and Coldplay, you'll probably like it too), it just doesn't
soar above a minor disappointment. Also, James Walsh's voice is a litte too much for me
(whiny falsetto) and even though the album wins after a few listenings, the vocal part
still spoils the picture to some extent.
- The new
acoustic wave going on at the moment. It's all very good and a welcome
change in times of the ridiculous nu-metal wave. BUT...we have to be careful that
everything doesn't turn into acoustically based singer-songwriter-like dreary melancholic
stuff. A good guitar bit is still needed every now and then.
- The upcoming US charity record for both AIDS victims in Africa and the
victims of September 11th. The cause itself is great and fronted by Bono, but the song is
absolute crap! Here they go spoiling an old Marvin Gaye song with contributions from
Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Destiny's Child etc. - and even classic artists like
Michael Stipe and Bono himself. Lads, you should have stayed away from it and written
something decent yourselves. I mean, Stipe and Bono - the potential for a great song was
in place. Anyway, the single is released October 29th and will probably be a total hit and
all over the radio throughout the winter. Damn! News has it that Michael Jackson is
planning yet another charity single due out shortly before christmas. Just to remind us
yet again how terrible the world is...
