- After the Britpop from the mid ´90's
and on and trouble figuring out what the next big thing should be, it seems like we've
finally found the new British era. I see it
as a more music oriented genre with a focus on GOOD SONGS. Artists like Travis, Coldplay
and Richard Ashcroft are clearly showing the way. Out with the tiring self-promotion of
bands like Oasis and in with a genuine focus on the music.
- Phoenix.
Great new French band with a fine debut album "United" out. The hit is called
"If I Ever Feel Better" and is a strange mix between dance, pop and funk. But it
really kicks rear!
- With dance, pop and trance becoming the
norm in the charts, Europe is experiencing a truly
international music scene. There was a time when rock dominated everything
and where British and American bands ruled. However, with these new genres, all kinds of
nationalities have found a way. The charts are now flooded with Italian, German, French
and even Danish bands. That to me is a good thing. The quality of the music, however, is a
totally different issue...
- Music films don't come around too often,
so I would like to recommend "Almost Famous".
It's a film about a Rolling Stone reporter hooking up with a ´70's rock band and tasting
the sweet life of rock'n roll. It opens across Europe this week.
- NME
Carling Awards 2001. On February 6th these awards are handed out in the
true NME spirit ("fuck you!!"). With all other awards gone clean, ass-kissing
and boring, the NME awards remain among the very few still worth paying attention to. You
can find much more about the awards at www.nme.com
but in case you're wondering, the most interesting nominees are (I have marked my personal
winners with a

- Poorly
maintained music websites. The web is a great opportunity for anyone to
get a say on his/her personal music favourites. And a lot of people actually do this and
create their personal music website. Fair enough. But I can't stand watching the huge
amount of music websites that are either poorly made or never updated. If people have
something to say, they should do it properly. There are too many sites out there that are
never updated once they have been launched. They should be take off the air...!
- Creative
blackout for content artists. It seems to me that many artists reach a
point in their carrer where, for one reason or another, they become too content and
self-satisfied. This then ruins their need to really say something and go somewhere with
their music and the result is often boring mediocre stuff. A couple of good example are
Elton John and George Michael who, after they came out of the closet, have been so happy
and content that their work has lacked the nerve and tension it had before. George Michael
should go back to being emotionally unstable instead of making boring duets with Whitney
Houston....it would serve his creativity better!!
- Bad boys like Eminem, Limp Bizkit
and whatever they're called. They main put on a show in the media but musically I just
haven't got the time for them. And attitude/personality-wise it's all about stating the
opinion that will get you most attention. Brains seem to be a shortage...
