The Hotlist What's hot right now!

THE HOT AND NOT LIST as of February 20th 2000

Le Mec:

Hotlist

  • The Cure: "Bloodflowers". After "Wild Mood Swings" my affection for The Cure had dropped a little, so it was a very pleasant surprise to see that their new album presents a Cure going back to the sound of their best album ever "Disintegration". Instead of the sometimes fairly uninteresting pop song throw-aways, we get long tracks with immense atmosphere. Just how we like The Cure. In other words, Robert Smith is feeling miserable again - and thank God for that!!!
  • The The: "NakedSelf". Even before listening to the album I knew it was going to end up on my Hotlist. I mean, five years to make an album simply cannot go wrong, at least not when we're talking about Mr. Johnson. Anyway, the new The The album has the usual amount of great edgy pop songs although it's less polished than ever before. But the band still equals great quality!
  • Dicte: "This Is Cool". The Danish pop queen is back with a more commercial album that is bound to give her the final breakthrough. If you're not from Denmark, you might want to consider getting your music shop to import this album for you. You won't be disappointed.
  • I stumbled over the latest Texas album "The Hush" a couple of weeks ago. It's been out for ages, but I kinda grew tired of their sound for a period, so I hadn't heard it yet. However, it's actually a rather fine album and definitely worth a listen - even if you're a rock freak...(which I'm not...).
  • Finding rare recordings by some of my favourite artists on the Internet. I'm really not into the whole MP3 scene, but when it gives me the opportunity to find songs I would not otherwise have access to, I'm all for it.
  • The Danish show for the Eurovision Song Contest was actually pretty entertaining this year. The music was rather lousy as always, but somehow they managed to put together a show that was much more up to date with what's going on at the moment. So even though I still think the whole concept is crap, I cannot help placing recognition where it's due.

Notlist

  • They may still be crazy about them in the UK (after all impersonate Brithis pride), but I think the whole concept of Oasis is starting to get a little watered out. They were once rock enfants terribles but might soon have to settle for a position as self indulgent old men...I guess I said more or less the same thing on the last Notlist, but I guess I mean it then. But - I'll still be getting their new album when it comes out shortly. Old habits die hard...
  • During the '90's we experienced a great period where the concept of the B-side really flourished again. Many of the British bands were releasing singles with three additional tracks of pretty fine standards (Suede and Oasis to mention a couple). However, now it seems like that has changed into a tendency towards filling the singles with more or less useless mixes of the same song. Come on bands - you must be able to do better than that!!
  • American mainstream rock - how it bores me these days. It seems like the more you can polish off the edges, the more it sells in the US. What a load of crap. Don't they know that at the same time they're polishing off the heart and soul...? I guess that soon they'll all sound like Shania Twain or Hootie & The Blowfish!!
