THE HOT AND NOT LIST as of October 15th
1998

Hotlist
Better Than Ezra: "How Does Your
Garden Grow?". Yes!! They have done it again! After the brilliant "Friction, Baby", one could have feared that
they would have a hard time following that - but not at all. There may not be as many
guitar hooks on the new album, but it's packed with great melodic rock. Something like
Toad The Wet Sprocket meeting U2 and ending up in bed together. Better Than Ezra have
taken a big step towards my Top 25 Artist List.
I just bought Elastica's debut album from
1995. I am surprised how good it is.
Faithless: "Reverence". Their
debut album from 1996 is an orgie of atmosphere and great moody dance rhythms.
U2 releasing a compilation of B-sides from
the '80's. That it comes as a an extra to a Best Of album comes as no surprise...
More and more music is released on CD that has not been available before (B-sides,
rarities, forgotten albums). It's a good thing that the record companies have started
producing even small volumes - even though it may not be a good deal for them.
Notlist
- Del Amitri playing in Copenhagen and
me not taking the time or money to finally go and see them (I live in Aarhus). Next
time...
- After listening intensively to the new Sheryl Crow
album, I must conclude that even though it's a good, it's not great. It merely builds on
what we already love Sheryl Crow for and adds little to her present status. She has a lot
more potential in her. With "The Globe Sessions" she is playing it safe.
- I'm desperately looking for Nik Kershaw's "The Riddle" on CD. They don't make
it anymore so it will be a lucky punch if I ever find it. For pop lovers, it's a classic.
- Songbirds like Céline Dion and Whitney Houston. They may have good voices but their
material is so smoothly produced that it has me yawning uncontrollably. Mind you, I never
have been a big fan of soul pop queens.
- It seems like the visitors to this website are hesitating to endulge in my weekly poll.
apparently, people still have too many doubts about security on the Net. Hopefully, poll
participation will pick up soon.
- Mike Horse is back with his Hotlist. I originally put this down on my Hotlist, but
seeing his Notlist, I had to take some action. Maybe I should suspend him again for
telling lies...?

Notlist
- Dave Stewart is out with a new album
called "SlyFi". I know Mec's happy about it, but why oh why does this man have
permission to release records?
- I recently found out that Alisha's Attic: "Alisha Rules The World" has been
produced by Dave Stewart. Now I'm seriously considering getting rid of it.
- I still haven't seen Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Balls 3" (no spelling
mistake...ha!) concert from London.
- I ain't quite sure yet, but I think Sheryl Crow's
latest album "The Globe Sessions" is her weakest release so far.
- Hidden bonus tracks on CDs. I've never
figured out why they don't simply put them on the track list.
- Mec is superficially blowing up his CD collection with albums copied on CD-Rom. He's a
bad boy! (I have about 20 albums on CD-Rom. Le Mec)

Hotlist
- My ears welcome the sound of Goodness
(Seattle band) again after an involuntary break of almost 4 years. Thanks to Internet
shopping I finally got their CD, after having searched since I heard them live in their
home town in December 1994.
- The new P.J.Harvey "Is This
Desire?" barely makes it to this list. In a few weeks though I am pretty sure it will
be up there among the stars, but this is the kind of music that has to sink in slowly in
order for you to really appreciate it.
- The new Cardigans single "My
favourite game". It really suits the band to put down a bit of their
oh-so-sweet-and-innocent style, and start scratching the surface a bit. Way to go!
- The B-sides and rarities album called "Oxford's Angels" (a bootleg) by Radiohead. It shows just how great this band is when you
consider the level of their B-sides.
Notlist
- Boy-bands and girl-bands. Why don't they sell their CD's through
children's toy-shops along with all the other merchandise? It is the only place they
belong, and definitely not in a music-store.
