THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of February 15th 2003

- Sugababes.
Well, I normally don't salute female soul pop bands, simply because they rarely manage to
capture my attention long enough. But after at least four great singles, starting with
"Overload", I must say that Sugababes have that something which sets them apart
from most of the usually very boring soul pop princesses. Maybe it's because they are
British and then fueled with bits of British pop music as well...
- Q Magazine
issue 200 hits the streets. The best and most consistantly great music magazine turns
another sharp corner, and does so in good shape. 200 more coming up I hope. Visit the website.
- Zwan.
Well, the album "Mary Star Of The Sea" is finally out and it seems Billy Corgan
has gotten the great reviews he hoped for. But I doubt Zwan will top the success of Smashing Pumpkins which was essentially also a Corgan
outfit. Remember part of the reason for abandoning the Pumpkins was disillusion with the
lack of success (record sales) of the band, compared to many of the young newcomers. He
will struggle to change this.
- I agree with Marilyn Manson when he says
that Michael Jackson has actually become a
more human and interesting person now that his life is falling apart and the gloves are
off. He has now let down the facade and is fighting with a straight face. It may not be a
very pretty face but...
- Look out for new albums by The Dandy Warhols, Placebo,
The Cardigans and Melanice C
in the next month or so. Yes, I am actually looking forward to the new Mel C album. Her
first was a treat for pop lovers. See other upcoming albums here.

- Don't
settle when you listen to music. A lot of music may technically be good
music but given our short lifetime you shouldn't waste your time on anything that's not
fulfilling in that particular moment when you need it. Personally, a good example is
British rock band Ocean Colour Scene. The music is definitely decent and rather okay at
times. But if you think about all the great music that's out there, would I really want to
spend (waste) my time listening to something I only find limited pleasure in and which
only occasionally makes me tap my feet? I think not and you shouldn't either. I'm not
saying you shouldn't take chances now and then and listen to something new. After all that
is the essence of expanding your musical horizon. But if what really moves you is
essentially the good old 70's or 80's music you already own, then by all means stick to
that and fuck what everybody else says.
- 2Pac
releasing posthumous album number seven (7!!!) six years after his death. I mean, either
the man was ridiculously productive inbetween all the gangsta-rappin' - or the sound of
tappin' on a coffin actually sells....
- Kula
Shaker best of. I always hated the brat Crispian Mills - also when
everybody else was hailing Kula Shaker as the new thing on the British scene. Now
everybody is ridiculing Mills and Kula Shaker and I can only say that at least history is
as revealing as ever. Crap music will eventually shine through. Now we should find the
bloke who gave them their record deal in the first place and make him listen to their
awful tunes for a month while staring at a picture of Crispian Mills. Ugh, even writing
this sends shivers down my spine...
- Pet Shop Boys:
"Disco 3". A good but at times also rather disappointing dance album from the
(still) best duo in the world. There are some fairly good new songs on the album but
letting other people have their say with PSB classics is often NOT a very good idea. If
you missed the dance aspect of PSB on "Release" you may find it here. You may
also just want to wait until the next real album.
