THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of January 15th 2002

- The La's:
"The La's". It's taken me more than a decade to discover this hidden gem. This
album was released in 1990 and was in many ways the godfather of the Britpop wave to come.
It's filled with melodic tunes and has recently been remastered. If you're into British
pop music and good tunes (even though not always with the best sonic production), then
this album is for you. By the way, they're the band who originally did "There She
Goes", later made famous by Sixpence None The Richer.
- Remastered
album re-releases. Even though it's a nuisance changing your favourite
cd's into remastered versions - not least economically, it's most often worth the effort.
The sound tends to give you more clarity and bass and in general more dynamics. Of course,
you could choose to just hang on the versions you've already bought but I find it
difficult to fully appreciate my favourite albums if I know that there's a better sonic
experience to be had. So I guess I'm in for major hazzles as many of my favourite albums
are gradually released in remastered editions....
- Mariah
Carey close to being dumped by her record label. Even though she will of
course be getting a ridiculous amount of money if it should happen, it's great to see that
there is after all some justice out there in the music jungle. I mean, 3-4 years back she
opted for a strategy where taking her clothes of was a major part of selling her music
which just got poorer and poorer in quality. Eventually, the audience caught on to her and
she was by-passed by the soul pop and R&B queens who rule the airwaves today. Hey,
Mariah, I'm sure Hugh Heffner's got a job for you...I wonder if the bookies are taking
bets on who will go down first - Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston?
- Talk Talk.
I've been getting back into their music from the first halft of the '80's and they truly
wrote some of the most personal and intimite pop music of that era. Their first four
albums are all really well-crafted and filled with melodic masterpieces. Later on they
went all weird and experimental, got great reviews, sold nothing, and eventually imploded.
Notlist
- It probably happened years ago, but it's
time to declare that every song has now been written.
From now on it'll all be remakes and imitations. It's hard to find anything on the music
scene today which hasn't already be done in one way or another and much of the music today
is literally built around existing music as either bad cover versions or samples. It's
good we have bands like The Strokes to bring us a few steps closer to what music used to
be all about - even though they're not exactly innovative either...
- Although I really like her music, I must
take a dump on Dido. I mean, what's up with
that happy face all the time. I find her music much more stimulating than her persona and
I think she should be a more fucked up person than she seems to be - if nothing else to
fit the vibe of her music. I demand her to be a sentimental wreck to go along with my
impression of her music!!!
