THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of July 14th 2003
Le Mec:
Hotlist
- Goo Goo
Dolls: "Gutterflower". The Dolls normally stand for pretty
ordinary (boring) mainstream US rock but this album has got a certain nerve that just
won't leave me alone. This is their best album so far and if you liked their popular
post-grunge anthem "Iris" you'll love this too.
- Justin
Timberlake: "Rock Your Body". You may think of the man what you
want (I know I do) but when it comes to kick-ass dance songs, they don't come much cooler
than this one. My feet are on fire when Da Timbie starts groovin'...
- Although it's not a new album, I've been
rediscovering the fabulous "Moon Safari" by Air.
Give or take a few tracks it's basically packed with car ad music, which in this case is a
good thing. If you want atmospheric music for the soul, this is the album to run for.
- Coldplay
rising to superstardom and still keeping completely sane and sympathetic. That deserves
recognition. Many have failed at this challenge.
Notlist
- Radiohead:
"Hail To The Thief". I'm still a big admirer of Radiohead and fan of their more
conventional rock albums. This is probably the most conventional we've seen them for the
last six years but it's still far away from the majestic sulk rock we all came to love
them for. Let's face it: it's now been six years since OK Computer
and in that period, hands on our hearts, the merits of Radiohead have been less than
convincing. And no matter how great we are trying to build them up to be, it's still a
fact that half their album output now concists of experimental blips and blops. I guess
that after waiting for three albums, we'll finally have to realise that the old great
Radiohead is dead and that the new world order has left us with something very different
and not nearly as intriguing. Personally, my interest for the band's new stuff has cooled
considerably and whenever I think Radiohead I find myself going back to The Bends and OK Computer every time. And
until they prove me wrong, these albums will continue to stand as the height of their
creativity.
- Barry White is dead. At 58 this is much
too soon for the king of porn soul. Think of him what you like but there was no one above
him when it came to using the word "love" both in amount and creatively. His
contribution to music should be cherished.
- I have this should/shouldn't feeling about Stereophonics.
On one side their music can be a so rock'n roll that it gets downright boring, but they
also manage to pull out quite a few absolute winners. Still, listening to one of their
albums in its entirety is a challenge. At least if you don't set your alarm clock to 30
minutes...
- Meat Loaf: "Couldn't Have Said It
Better". Not much to say really. The man's imitating himself like he has been for the
last 25 years. Horrible stuff.
- For those of you into French gum pop, Alizée has a new
album out. I don't know about this one. The debut from last year was rather okay, even
though it had little to offer if you scratched the surface. This one is more of the same
where it's definitely a good thing NOT to think too much about what it all means...
- Ozzy Osbourne and daugther Kelly recording
a duet together. Cashing in on the hype, are we...?
