THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of June 14th 2003
Le Mec:
Hotlist
- Live in concert. A full-blown rock concert
delivered in a setting where band and audience fed off each other. Truly great stuff and
if there were any spiderwebs around the venue, these have now been blown away by the
musical blast.
- Lloyd Cole: "Music In A Foreign
Language". Not much is new with this new album but a man like Lloyd Cole deserves
mentioning every time the world is graced with his melancholic singer-songwriter genius.
- After seeing "8 Mile" I have new-found respect for Eminem. It's a great film and even though it's only partly
about his life, his acting skills alone deserve credit. I don't know...it just gave me
renewed interest in his music.
- Redemption of the '80's. Good to see that
a decade largely dismissed as pretty crappy music-wise is now recognised big time with
billions of artists imitating the sound or using it as heavy inspiration. True, there are
many bad things to say about the musically low decade but the fact that it has been just
as important like any other decade cannot be overlooked.
- Just thought I'd pass on a valuable piece of information when buying music or movies
online. CD-Wow is already a pretty good and
cheap alternative, but if you go to their Hong Kong site (www.cd-wow.com) and order, most items will be even
cheaper. I can't promise this is the case for everyone, it depends on how you national
currency holds up against the Hong Kong Dollar. But have a go.
Notlist
- European Song Contest 2003. I only
watched very little of the show and haven't heard much of the tunes, but the Turkish
winner is simply awful. Next year Denmark will be in the race again (we totally bumped out
last year and were relegated to Loser's League) to kick everybody's butt......yeah
right....
- Ever since this evil came to Danish shores, the Popstars
phenomenon has spun out of control. We're now going on the third round and rumour has it
the next version will be for people aged 70+. So if you granny's still got her teeth
intact you may just be looking at a new popstar in the family...
- Paddy McAloon: "I Trawl The
Megahertz". Anyone expecting familiar territory from the Prefab
Sprout frontman will be hugely disappointed. This is basically fifty minutes of
ambient orchestral nonsense with voice samples thrown in. Let's hope it was just something
he needed to get out of his system.
- A-ha: "Lifelines". Dull and a
big disappointment compared to the fine "Major Earth Minor Sky". I know the
album's been around for some time but I haven't listened to it in full until now.
