THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of April 14th 2002
Le Mec:
Hotlist
- Del Amitri: "Can You Do Me Good?". If,
like me, you are fairly infatuated by the universe of Del Amitri, then any new release
will be a big event. This new album is no exception. The band has taken a slightly more
soulful direction with their music which is not necessarily a bad thing. However, if
you're new to the band you're probably still better off directing your attention to the
album "Change Everything" or their best of release "Hatful Of Rain"
from 1998.
- Pet Shop Boys: "Release". A more
organic release from Pet Shop Boys, practically stripped for the great dance anthems they
normally serve up. It takes just a while to reach a point where you don't miss them badly
but when the songs begin to reveal themselves you realise you're sitting with yet another
accomplished album from pop music's finest.
- Sheryl Crow: "C'mon C'mon". The summer
arrives early this year as Shery Crow releases an album packed with summer tunes and
perfect as the soundtrack for a summer of love 2002. So go searching for the love...
- Kent:
"Vapen & Ammunition". Swedish britrockers return with yet another pack of
finely crafted pop songs about life, love and loneliness. Still the kings of Scandinavia.
- The The remastered. A pack of the finest
intelligent pop albums of the last 20 years have been re-released in remastered editions,
some of them with bonus tracks. A good opportunity to discover or re-discover the twisted
universe of Matt Johnson.
- Russell
Crowe (yes, the actor) telling Courtney Love to get off her ass and go on
tour if she wants to be considered a rock star...
- Coldplay
have finished recording the follow-up to their brilliant debut "Parashutes".
Expected release later this year. It's gonna be great to get the masters back to show all
the pale imitations around how it's done.
- Amazon.co.uk
customer service. Have been shopping extensively at Amazon's UK site over the past six
months and I'm really impressed by their level of service. It doesn't get much better when
they ship part of an order at no extra cost just because the remaining part is a couple of
days delayed. Or when they give you discount coupons because your shipment is a bit
delayed. And e-mails are always answered the same day. Top notch!
- I've praised before some artist websites maintained by the artists themselves. The
latest discovery is that Mr. Lloyd
Cole (www.lloydcole.com)
is actually a pretty decent geek when it comes to computer gymnastics. He developed his
site www.lloydcole.com himself. Respect is due.
- Got a new
cd player with greater sonic adventures to follow.
Notlist
- Simple Minds: "Cry" and Supertramp: "Slow
Motion". Two grand bands with brand new albums. Sadly, they're both pale imitations
of what they once were. I still have much affection for these bands, but one half bad
release after another makes it just that little bit harder every time to keep hanging on.
- Oh no. Céline
Dion is back to torment us with her utterly useless machine pop which
actually manages to be annoying and boring at the same time. Of course she'll sell
millions like she always does, so this probably won't be the last time we'll suffer.
- Lenny
Kravitz's media appearences. I've now watched and read several interviews
with the man and it strikes me how he just seems to couldn't care less about offering any
insights about his musical universe. He really comes across as cool or arrogant -
depending on your mood. I still find his music brilliant but the man himself and his lack
of opinion is not worth spending much time on.
- The new Oasis single "The Hindu Times" does not
signal great things in store. I find it really ordinary bordering boredom. Hopefully, the
forthcoming summer album has better things to offer.
