THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of October 13th 2003
Le Mec:
Hotlist
- Lene
Marlin: "Another Day". It's probably just another pop album, but
landing somewhere between Dido and Natalie Imbruglia, some of us will like it very much
anyway.
- R.E.M.: "In Time" DVD. Their music
videos collected. R.E.M. were always one of those bands making memorable music videos you
actually want to watch more than just a few times. Their latest "Bad Day" is
pretty fab too.
- Duran Duran: "Greatest" DVD. As a Duran
fan, this is obviously an important release for me. However, most music fans would
probably get something out of watching this collection of of standard-setting videos from
a couple of decades ago. Me, I'll just go back in time and remember the many foolish hair
styles I went through to look like my idols...
- Groove
Armada are pretty cool. Their mix of dance, chill-out and pop hits you in
the right spot where it feels really soothing.
- Black Eyed
Peas: "Where Is The Love". A classic MTV radio hit. Pretty damn
fine nontheless and will last a long time...
- In all the "Greatest Hits" frenzy (see below), there are a few
releases opening up the universe to great artists you should know and cherish. If you
don't, it must surely be a mistake. I'm thinking of R.E.M., Suede, Sheryl Crow and Red Hot Chili
Peppers. These will definitely be quality-packed discs.
Notlist
- The greatest "Greatest Hits"
season ever!! The record companies must really pressured for earnings because the next
couple of months will flood us all with best of compilations from practically anyone who
can play two notes in the music business. Guess the positive side of it is that you'll be
able to get lots of great music with your favourite artists without having to sit through
all their crap albums. Hell, Mike Oldfield even has about 4-5 different Greatest Hits
albums to choose from to give you an even greater selection.
- It's Travis
time once again. However, even though "12 Memories" is probably a perfectly good
Travis album, I just haven't got the patience to sit through it at the moment. Don't know,
I guess their soft balladeer sounds have reached the point of saturation after four
albums. Also, many similar bands have flooded the music scene since their last album and
their sound is just not their own anymore.
- The
Darkness. Just a little bit too theatrical for my taste. And really, if
you want theatrical, go for Freddie Mercury or David Bowie any time. And was ´80's heavy
metal really so great that it needs to be revived once again....?
- Enigma:
"Voyageur". Enigma's first album was and still a great achievement and a joy to
put on the stereo. Now, five albums into the enigmatic world of atmospheric
drum-machinery, the tank of inspiration has been emptied more than once and should be left
alone.
- The state of...Boy George. Sorry for asking, but exactly when did this
skinny '80's pop boy become so fat???! Saw him on an American talk show recently and was
astonished by how well make-up and at least 50 pounds too much does NOT go together!!
- The state of...Courtney Love. Hmm....even for a rebel kid, she seems to
be completely losing it in her quest for a recognition she's desperately craving. She
probably won't have much luck since these last couple of years have left an impression
mainly coloured by her ridiculous behaviour and less by her musical skills.
- "Best
Power Ballads In The World...Ever!" - a new compilation. Oh no, not
yet another album compiling everything from Foreigner to Europe and Whitesnake. The idea
wasn't a bad one fifteen years ago (!!!). It's really getting old now.
