The
Hotlist

THE HOT AND NOT LIST as of November 12th 2000
Le Mec:
Hotlist
Sade: "Lovers Rock". They're back with
more laid back jazz pop. I've always been a huge fan...
U2: "All That You Can't Leave Behind".
I've been listening to this album for a week now and couldn't really decide whether I
liked it or whether I was disappointed. Finally, I decided to put it on the Hotlist. In
many ways, it's U2 going back to their old sound from the ´80's and the band searching
for past values. This in itself, of course, can never be a bad thing - knowing the quality
of their work. However, when you know what the band is capable of and their creativity
it's hard not to be a little bit disappointed. It's almost like albums like "Achtung
Baby" and "Pop" never happened....I kinda miss the experimenting elements
in the music...
The soundtrack from the romantic movie Message In A Bottle should be checked out. It's filled with fine
little songs from great artists like Sheryl Crow and Sarah McClachlan...and just carries a
quiet and itimate tone all the way through...
Cowded
House. I've been listening
a lot to their music and just wanted to point out - again - that few bands have a well
developed "pop ear" like these guys. So them splitting up a few years back
really wasn't the happiest of things to happen for the music scene...
We all have our weaknesses for bands that are probably not the most important or
particularly brilliant in the world. Bands that only have such a high star because they
have planted themselves in your memory and won't go away because there's just too much
stuff attached to them. Very often they're also bands you would probably have to spend
days or weeks explaining your friends why the hell you even like them. To me, one of these
bands is Bucks
Fizz...Yep, the good old
English pop darlings from the first part of the ´80's. I went back and listened to them a
few times and they really still mean something to me. Kind of my own private corny
oasis...what's yours?
Got hold of a greatest hits collection from Orchestral Manoeuvres In The
Dark (OMD), another one of
the fine synth based pop groups from the ´80's. It's great stuff and shows that the band
was very underrated all along.
Danish artist Lars Muhl
has always had the recognition of music critics. I've never really given his music much
thought until I bought his Best Of collection. Having listened to it a few times I must
admit that he does have qualities that make him special on the Danish music scene. For all
international visitors I can inform you that he sings in English, so if you have the
opportunity to get hold of his music you should give it a chance...
Notlist
Erasure. Out with yet another album filled with
uninteresting and unimportant gay pop tunes. They should consider calling it quits!
Savage
Garden. Very popular, this
band from Down Under. Well, although there are certain pop qualities in their music, they
mostly bug me...especially the high voice of the singer. There's just a little too much
sensitivity...
Five years ago, the angry young women invaded the music scene, led by Alanis Morissette and "Jagged little
Pill". Today, most of them are just boring to listen to, and even though it's still a
fine album, I rarely listen to Morissette's album in its full lenght. It just gets dull
after a few songs.
