THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of May 12th 2002

Hotlist
- I recently spent a magical hour and a
half in the company of Danish band Swan Lee.
Their live show was simply the most sensually stimulating and sonically enriching live
experience I've had in a long time. It was like fifteen fantastic Bond themes in a row
with a brilliant cover version of New Order's "Blue Monday" to wrap it all up.
Their album will be released throughout Scandinavia later this year and if you get the
chance you must check them out! More info at www.swanlee.dk.
- Kent
live. Experienced a strong live performance from Sweden's finest yesterday. They are
really slowly turning into rock royalty in Scandinavia by reaching musical standards way
beyond the rest of them. Great bass and guitar driven stuff!!
- Eskobar.
This Swedish band is simply a hidden gem, moving around in a universe influenced by the
more atmospheric elements of britpop and even some Chris Isaak influences. Their latest
album "There's Only Now" is really great. It is available internationally. More
info at www.eskobar.com.
- No Doubt
have not been on my attention list for some time. I more or less had the opinion
that they had had their time in the sun and disappeared back into ska hell. But now
they've returned with a total cracker of a pop song - the brilliant "Hella
Good". I haven't yet heard their new album "Rock Steady" but if this is
their new direction I still wanna play...
- The
Gallagher brothers from Oasis are back. With all the niceness and
back-rubbing that's going on in the music business at the moment, it's great to have these
guys back at the table to piss on everybody's plates and with more than a few honesties
about what they think about the scene. They may not have been missed musically but their
attitudes certainly make the world more colourful. And that's the foookin' truth!!
- The Dandy Warhols are currently recording the
follow-up to their brilliant album "Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia". The
album is expected out later this year. An interesting news bit is that Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran and former Thin Lizzy producer Tony
Visconti are planned to guest the album.
Notlist
- Michael
Bolton is still making records. For more than a decade now he's been the
biggest insult to real music and someone should have pulled the plug on him by now.
- The fact that just by backing the whole
thing with a big bag of money it's possible to make Barbra
Streisand hip again by advertising our pants off on the telly. And no, her
nose hasn't gotten smaller after all these years.
- George Michael postponing the recording of his
next album for 4 months because of a "depression" due to the fairly modest
success of his new single "Freeek!" (it "only" got to number 7). Get
over it, man!! If just a little bit of chart disappointment like that can knock the socks
off you, you may as well pack it in...Respect for him takes a dive.
- It's a sure as the sun rising each
morning: whenever there's a major football championship going on we're flooded with national football anthems supposed to cheer the teams
along towards greatness. Well, these songs are rarely very exciting but the Danish one
this time around for the World Cup is quite simply impressively awful. Take any David
Hassellhoff song, add a pound of steel drums, and it will still sound a lot better than
what this country's been able to come up with. Hope other countries will do better. If
not, we really have a good chance of compiling the worst album ever!
- Rolling
Stone Magazine recently published a list of 50 albums which characterise
an uncool record collection. The list certainly includes a lot of really crappy albums.
However, it also mentions fine albums like Supertramp's "Breakfast In America",
Pet Shop Boys' Actually" and George Michael's "Listen Without Prejudice",
so there goes part of my respect for that list...
