THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of August 11th 2002

Hotlist
- Red Hot
Chili Peppers: "By The Way". Although I'm not a huge fan of the
chili peppers I must say that this new album is simply outstanding. I was always mostly
into their more melodic stuff ranging from ballads to midtempo songs. When they get too
eager and heavy-funky they also get fairly uninspiring. However, this album is filled with
the first type of songs and potentially one of the best albums to come out this year.
- No Doubt:
"Rock Steady". I've praised the new direction of No Doubt before and having
listened to their latest album for a while I must say that we're almost talking rebirth.
Gone is the horrible ska dominance in favour of a more dance and beat oriented sound. The
album contains at least 4-5 songs capable of becoming major hits. "Hey Baby" and
"Hella Good" are only two of them...
- Better Than Ezra: "Closer". This album
came out last year, largely ignored. I just wanted to mention that if you're into Ezra's
stuff this album too is worth getting. It's pretty similar to their "How Does Your
Garden Grow" album.
- The Watchmen have also released an album with new
material behind my back. It's called "Slow motion" and is a double package with
new and live stuff.
- I've noticed the release of a few
potentially great albums. I haven't heard anything from them yet but am pretty sure
there's something worth directing your interest at: Kelli
Ali, the former singer from Sneaker Pimps, has an album out called
"Tigermouth". Should be twisted pop music with a certain trashy feeling. Also,
Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran and Stephen Duffy call
themselves The Devils and have just released an album with
heavy early '80's inspiration. It's called "Dark Circles" and got great reviews
in Q Magazine.
Notlist
- This is not a joke: Republica, the band known only for "Ready To
Go", has released a best of album. I mean, they only ever released two albums. The
first only had one, maybe two hits and the second was total crap. One final cash-in before
they end up in the bargain bins all over the world, I guess...
- The Doors
will be reforming with original members and a new singer. This is one project doomed to
failure. I mean, can anyone find any reasons for this except that money's getting tight in
the Doors camp?
