The
Hotlist

THE HOT AND NOT LIST as of April 9th
1999
Le Mec:
Hotlist
- Saint Etienne: I have been
listening to their albums a lot lately and it's just great stuff. Pop music done with
immense class.
- British duo Curve. If you're
into The Cure, Cranes, Lush or just great indie music, check them out.
- Luksus:
"Repertoire". I know I already recommended Luksus a few weeks ago, but I
strongly think that their album deserves a lot of attention. A shame it isn't available
outside Denmark.
- We're only a few days away from the beginning of another chapter of the Suede era. On monday their single
"Electricity" is released and the weather gets a little bit warmer.
- Faithless. The best dance act
around at the moment.
Notlist
- Cher: Well, I liked
"Believe", but with her second single "Strong Enough" I'm back to just
hating her again. She impersonates many of the superficial and sickening things I don't
like about American mainstream pop music. Ooourffff...!
- The Verve: "A Northern
Soul". Not a bad album, but I was so disappointed when I heard it. I expected it to
contain many of the qualities that made "Urban Hymns" such a great experience,
but only momentarily does the band pull out the song level presented on UH. Seems like
they had to get really stoned before they really started writing big songs. I guess the
drugs worked after all...
- Unkle: "Psyence
Fiction". This album may be a sign of the times and a good indicator of where music
is headed at the moment. But as an album, it's very uneven and the songs really aren't
that strong. With a few obvious exceptions - among others the fine "Rabbit In Your
Headlights" with Thom Yorke on vocals. But in general I find the album overrated.
- It looks like we might have to wait until the Fall for a new album from Live. They have finished recording, so it's
other things getting in the way. I got the information from an unofficial Live website, so
we can always hope for it to be just rumours.
- Lisa Ekdahl doing jazz. I'm
very fond of her music, but she should stick to her very personal Swedish style. It's what
she knows and does best. Her voice is a little too thin for jazz and she never really
manages to conceil the trace of a Swedish accent.
