THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of September 8th 2001

Hotlist
- Garbage: "Beautiful Garbage". They're back with
their third album (October 1st) and the world should prepare for yet another round of
cunningly crated machine pop/rock. The album is a little more pop than rock compared to
their first two and the innovation level has been kept to a minimum. This is not
necesarily a bad thing, although you might expect more from a band with a talent like
this. The album contains 13 songs of which a couple should probably have been left off.
The rest are a nice third encounter and will probably haunt the charts for the next year
or so. And I still have the greatest respect for Shirley Manson - I think she's still one
of the most interesting female lead singers in the business. And Garbage, well, their
worst is still a lot better than most of what's out there at the moment. Recommended!!
- Aqua
splitting up while they're ahead. I guess the world would've had a hard time sucking up
another round of foolish Aqua tunes and I guess they made the millions they're entitled
to. So it's good to see that they know when to quit and pursue other interests.
- Human
League. They made some of the best albums of the early '80's, then made
some crap ones. Now they're back with a really great one called "Secrets". It's
probably not gonna earn them too many new fans but for people with a heavy bond to the
'80's, there's a lot of value here.
- Saint
Etienne. I've gotten myself entangled in a periode where these masters of
sexy pop music simply stick to my cd player. They've never received what they deserve, yet
their albums continue to cost loads of money. Now, there's a twist.....? Anyway, they're
still one of the best pop acts around - especially when they make an effort.
Notlist
- Death of R & B pop star Aaliyah. It's one thing that she's dead and that is
obviously a tragedy. Another tragedy, however, is the way the media have just sucked up
the entire story and created an total frenzy around it. I mean, famous people die all the
time, why is this one so special? It seems like you need planes or other means of
transportaion if you want your death covered in the news...
- The
Cranberries. They were huge five years ago and soon they'll have a new
album out. However, after two albums it seemed like the world got fed up with Dolores
O'Riordan's naive look at the world and her boring tales about how she would like to make
it better. There's still a lot of Irish legacy in their music - it just seems like the
world has stopped listening. Perhaps they should try getting a gig down the nearest pub in
Dublin...?
- Prince has released a best of album containing 17 of
his best songs. He's released far better compilations in the past and this one smells an
awful lot like money. After five or six crap albums in a row, has the man finally realised
that his time was just about 10-15 years ago and decided to cash in on that...?
- Mariah
Carey - the farce. You've probably read all about her nervous breakdown by
now and how she "doesn't do stairs". Anyway, here's a clear example of how the
music business slowly but surely took an innocent girl and completely ripped her for any
sanity she may have had. I mean, is she anything but looks these days....?
- ....and Jacko
is back. Whiter than ever before!
