The Hotlist What's hot right now!

THE HOT AND NOT LIST as of July 7th 1999

Le Mec:

Hotlist

  • It's festival season - with lots of opportunities to experience great bands.
  • Pet Shop Boys are laying down the last strokes for their upcoming album.
  • Music for the Tarantino movies. Handpicked pearls with great atmosphere. I would like to spend a day with Quentin's music collection.
  • The melody. I've realised that the good and catchy melody is crucial to most of the music I listen to. And I think it should be the core of every song - except in Death Metal maybe...
  • The atmosphere surrounding Jeff Buckley's "Grace". It's a fine album, but the feel of it is reinforced by the story of the tragic death of an artist who was only at the beginning of something big (Buckley drowned when he went for a swim). However, I think the story (almost myth) makes it a better album than it actually is musically.
  • Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince: "Summertime". Don't forget this brilliant rap song when you're having those summer parties or going for a summer cruise in your car.

Notlist

  • The majority of the gangsta rap scene. With the exception of a few decent acts (Snoop Doggy Dogg, Dr. Dre, 2Pac), the attitude and entourage of gangsta rap is really tiring and uninteresting. I guess I would feel differently if I lived in the middle of South Central - but I don't.
  • The compilation hell of the music business. Consider the amount of compilations that are being mass produced and the extremely poor quality. Do the people selecting these songs even think about anything but quick profit? I guess not...! Every now and then decent compilations surface, but the distance between these occasions is enormous.
  • Mediocre artists. As the day gets busier and the time for listening to music decreases, quality becomes a high priority. And then it really occurs to you how much crap music is actually out there. At least we all have the right to choose.
  • "Festival music for the people". Take a look at all the music festivals around you and think of how few of the artists you really want to see. Doesn't it strike you how many fillers they fit in the program? I guess it's sufficient for Mr. and Mrs. Jones who are mainly there to eat the food they brought along...
