THE HOT AND NOT LIST as of November 6th
1999
Le Mec:
Hotlist
Liz Phair: "Whitechocolatespaceegg". It seems
like Sheryl Crow has been losing a little bit of her breath lately, smoothing out some of
the edges in her music. I personally find that a shame, but fortunately we have artists
like Liz Phair to take over. So if you miss the strength and nerve of Sheryl Crow's second album, try listening to Liz Phair's
latest from 1998. It's great stuff!
Juliana
Hatfield. Her career has
never really taken flight, but she really hits a nerve in me with her melodic alternative
rock. And I've always been a sucker for sweet female voices combined with a great guitar
base. Anyway, her latest "Bed" from last year slowly grows on you - and it's
still growing at the moment for me...
Live
will be playing in Copenhagen on
December 11th. Count me in - they are probably one of my favourite bands at the moment.
The sound of Everything But The Girl ("Temperamental"). It's always a
pleasure to experience a band that manages to write great melodic songs, keep their
personality doing so, and still add contemporary music elements to their sound. Respect!
Notlist
- After coming back from a couple of weeks in New York, it's a big disappointment to find
how boring and uninspiring the
American charts really are. I mean, it's either horrible
R&B soul stuff or some outdated post grunge band trying to sound really pissed off
about something they haven't got a clue about anyway. Anyway, when it comes to
inspiration, I still find Europe much more plentiful...
Queen: Greatest Hits 3. I know we're approaching
Christmas, but this album by Queen really smells like squeezing the last drops out of
Freddie's legacy. Shame on you the rest of the band (or more likely the record company).
Angry
young bands on the music
scene today. Maybe I have grown too old to understand their cause, but it's hard to take
these band serious with their combination of anti-social looks and "fuck you"
attitude. Guess Nirvana didn't die for nothing. Unfortunately, all that was carried on was
an obscene amount of imitations without contents.
