THE HOT AND
NOT LIST as of August 6th 2000
Le Mec:
Hotlist
- This coming automn will be more
exciting than ever with a lot of new releases from some of the very greatest - and from my
point of view especially: Radiohead, Del Amitri, Mansun,
Placebo, Madonna,
U2 and Simple Minds.
- Richard
Ashcroft: "Alone With Everybody". It took me a while to figure
out whether I liked this album or whether it was a rather dull disappointment, but it
seems like a very natural album to follow The Verve's "Urban Hymns". In fact,
this album could easily have been the next Verve album. Anyway, check out the track
"New York" which is the best on the album.
- Geneva's
second album "Weather Underground" must be mentioned too. I just recently got
around to buying it but it is every bit as good as their first. So if you liked that one
you won't be disappointed...
- I recently went to Paris and bought a
really cheap cd with a French band called Superphenix.
Without any expectations I put it on and it turned out to be really fantastic. Sort of the
French version of Kent. Mind you, you will probably have to be just a little bit into
France to like the album (see Notlist...).
- Also, check out the self-entitled cd
from 1997 with the band called Junkster.
It's fine pop with interesting details here and there. Their website.
- For the dance heads I recommend the
debut album from Barcode Brothers
("Swipe Me"). There's some funky stuff to be found here.
Notlist
- As mentioned, I recently went to
Paris and faced the French music scene for
the first time in a few years. And I must say that unless you have some kind of special
pact with the country and French in general, the music scene will seem completely useless.
Good French rock music is very hard to come by and the charts are usually filled with pop
music of the lighter kind. BUT if, like me, you have a certain amount of attachment to the
culture (after all I do have three French albums on my Top 50), there is still some
great stuff around. You will probably need to look closely for it - unless you stumble
over it like in the case of Superphenix (see above). But for the general listener, avoid
French music - it's not worth the effort.
- Bernard
Butler. Having listened to his second album "Friends And
Lovers", the conclusion is clear: The man can't sing and is in desperate need of good
songwriting skills. One can only regret the day he left Suede because he certainly needs
the kind of input you can get from another strong personality (in this case Brett
Anderson). His music is filled with the same kind of boring guitarbased stuff you can't
listen to for an entire album. Butler should find himself a band again and let others do
the singing!
- The so-called rebirth of Bon Jovi. Unless you're driving around Texas in a pick-up
truck, life's just too short...
