The Hotlist What's hot right now!

THE HOT AND NOT LIST as of March 6th 1999

Le Mec:

Hotlist

  • Having a very varied taste in music. I find it very stimulating to go from Nirvana to Pet Shop boys and then over to Tom Petty. All within fifteen minutes! Every mood has its own tune.
  • Air: "Moon Safari". It's not the album of the year 1998 - as some music critics call it - but it's very clever dance music with a strong smell of the '80's.
  • After a long hard struggle and a reputation as the most dull decade so far, the '80's are finally getting their fair share of recognition. More and more bands today mention this synth-oriented decade as a great source of inspiration. Admitted, there was a lot of crap too...
  • Frank Sinatra. Yep, the old fellow is back on my stereo, and he's filling the room with atmosphere from back when a man was a gentleman and a woman was a dame to be won over by all kinds of cunning stunts. Frank is timeless.
  • Damn it! I've tried to resist and not cave in, but I have to make a confession: Robbie Williams does have a point in his music. It's honest and he's a great entertainer. I never thought I'd end up saying this back when he did that horrible version of "Freedom". Anyway, but today very little reminds you that he was once in T... T...
  • I'm pleasantly surprised with the new sound of Danish band Kashmir. They used to be noisy and dull, but they have now grown to be a much more interesting and melodic rock band. Promising.
  • If you haven't already given these bands a listen, I urge you to check out Headswim, Placebo, Puressence and Geneva. There's a lot of quality in their music.

Notlist

  • Having considered this for a while I've come up with a few British bands I consider less than worth the while:
    - Catatonia. Where's the talent? Where's the bother? They're quite big in the UK but I really can't see why. The songs are dull rock and the singer's not even that good looking (even though they think so in Britain...let's invite them to Scandinavia and show them real beauty!!).
    - Republica. They used to charge ahead with great dancerock like "Ready To Go". Since then they have run out of songwriting skills and turned into a pretty annoying piece of poppunk mediocrity.
-Space. Very British in spirit and also pretty popular at home. I just find them uninteresting and boring when they don't hit the occasional high like "Avenging Angels". They're Madness gone Britpop. Well, at least Madness had some quality.
  • Don't you get tired of the entire rumble about Marilyn Manson and his battle against American morality and society? I mean, there's something strangely superficial about his trying to shock and, as a European, I have a hard time taking him seriously. He should stick to his music and focus on improving what's within his reach. As for American morality (hypocracy!!), it's rotten to the core!!
  • British music paper NME. The most bitching music institution around. Once you get established as an artist, expect no mercy.
  • Danish music monthly Zoo Magazine. Stop nicking half the ideas and inspiration from Q Magazine and start being more creative yourselves!
