LIST as of August 5th 2001

- Live are back. Got my hands on
an advance copy of the new album "V" (scheduled for release mid-September). The
band still plays traditional rock with lots of attitude and the album follows nicely in
the footsteps of the previous "The Distance To Here". It varies from relatively
acoustic tracks to more heavy guitarbased songs. However, even though I haven't listened
to it that much yet, I would say that the 14 songs on the albums are more different from
each other than on "Distance". The conclusion, as always, is that you should go
buy the album as soon as it hits the shops.
- Emiliana
Torrini: "Love In The Time Of Science" . This is not a new album
(1999) - just a great one. Another songbird from Iceland - just wanted to make sure she's
not forgotten in the Björk hype....Pop music from Iceland for all of people who prefer the regular atmospheric stuff to
Björk's more experimental persona. Also, this album was the soundtrack to much of the
week I spent in San Francisco this summer...
- In these times where Travis and Coldplay
are leading the new wave of talented young British bands I want to promote The Devlins. They have been around since the early '90's
and are playing a kind of music very similar to what's in at the moment. However, where
Travis sometimes become just a little too nice, The Devlins always keep a certain edge to
their sound. Check them out! A great album to start with would be "Waiting".
Their website.
- There's a new book out about the heavy
metal band Mötley
Crue. It's called
"The Dirt" and contains just that. I haven't read it yet but as far as
understand, it really serves up all the dirty details in the most dirty way imaginable.
Nothing is left unsaid or uncovered. This is a must-read for me!! It's by Neil Strauss and
the full title is "The Dirt:
Confession's of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band". If you're offended by foul language, do no pick
up this book. It will blow you away!
- The return of quality in the charts. The charts have become meaningful
again with the prsence of artists like U2, R.E.M., Eagles, Depeche Mode, Madonna and Dido.
This is just so great to see when were used to charts filled with second grade
dumpster trash... Although I do admit to liking the occasional single here and there...
- Album
release - good news. Just around the corner are albums by Garbage
("Beautiful Garbage"), Live ("V") and New Order ("Get
Ready"). So get ready to rumble!!

- Driving around states like Arizona,
Utah, Colorado and Wyoming for two weeks this summer, listening to the radio really made
me a slave to country music. I mean, in such
a big free country you would think that it would be possible to find a decent rock channel
anywhere. But no! I have finally come to understand why artists like Shania Twain, Faith
Hill etc. are so huge in the US. It's all they play on the fxxxing radio! If I hadn't
gotten out when I did, I swear I would have turned into a
cowboy-hat-wearing-pickup-truck-driving hillbilly. I was so close to overdosing on decent
rock/pop after coming home...
- US music
in general. Now, this is not intended to badmouth US music because there
are numerous great bands in the states. But I wish to say this on a more general level:
when listening to American music - be it rock, pop or alternative - it seems to me that
every edge has been scraped away (pop) and most of the edge in rockband seems contrived.
I'm missing something more genuine...I'm not saying this is automatically an ingredient in
European rock or pop, it just seems to be a more natural part a lot more often. To me,
America is very mainstream in every sense of the word. That can either be a good thing or
a bad thing - it depends on he/she who listens...Of course, me being Danish n' all, all
you Americans out there could just tell me to take Aqua and shove them up my ass, and I
wouldn't have anything to say to defend myself. So ain't music grand...And by the way, if
you check out my Top 50 Album list you'll find lots of American bands. So what the hell am
I rambling on about?! I guess I just had to release my gut.
- Album
release - bad news. Del Amitri's new album was to be released in
September. However, du to the record company's schedule it has been pushed to early next
year. So because of this we'll have to wait another six monts for already ready and
recorded music. Bugger!!
