THE HOT AND NOT
LIST as of March 5th 2000

Hotlist
- The
Smashing Pumpkins: "Machina/The Machines Of God". The first
sounds from this album had me worried about The Pumpkins going back to a style with too
much noise and less melody. However, as it turns out, the new album is filled with quality
rockers and plenty of good stuff for any rock fan. Definitely recommended!
- For The
The fans, the good news is that later this year the band will be releasing
the two very hard to come by albums "Pornography Of Despair" from 1982 and
"Gun Sluts" from 1997. These albums were never really released since they
weren't considered commercial enough by the record company. However, Matt Johnson has
founded his own label and will be releasing the albums through here...
- Melanie C.
The Spice Girl has actually released an album with pop songs of a pretty high standard.
And to me it's very obvious that the day the Spice Girls are no longer will not have that
deep an impact on Melanie C's career. On the contrary, maybe. She might even gain some
more recognition when she'll no longer have to be associated with what no critic will ever
admit to liking...
- Well, the rulers of Europop, Aqua, are back. And they seem totally prepared to take on
the world one more time. It's funny, because being among the founders of Europop has sort
of earned the band a certain amount of recognition with the established music press. I
guess the media have finally realised that it's a music genre that's here to stay and
pretty much part of the future of popular music. Another thing I noticed is that the new
album hasn't gotten any really bad reviews, which in itself is remarkable for a genre
where the critics normally wouldn't even dignify releases with any comments. So I guess
the concept of Agua has actually earned some kind of recognition within their field...
- Any Duran
Duran fans out there might like to know that a more or less official date
has finally been set for the release of their next album. June 6th should be the release
date in the US and possibly sooner in the rest of the world. Well, let's hope it'll stick
this time - it's becoming a farce with an album where half the songs have already been
played live for over a year now...
Notlist
- When I listen to the music of the
talents of guitarists Bernard Butler
(ex-Suede) and Johnny Marr (ex-Smiths and
Electronic), I can't help thinking that even though they're making fine music at the
moment, their talent screams for so much more. I mean, Bernard Butler has never really
regained his inspiration after splitting with Suede, and Johnny Marr seems to contain so
much more than Electronic could ever contain. I think they need some really strong
personalities to challenge them and really bring out their best. Someone like Brett
Anderson or Morrissey...
- Okay, here we go: The past few Hotlists
I've been complaining about Oasis and how
the band has lost some of the nerve they had in the beginning. Now their fourth album
"Standing On The Should Of Giants" has come out, and after listening to it, my
verdict is that what I feared has more or less happened. Their music still contains the
quality that any Oasis song will always have, but it just seems like they are brewing
their music using the same old formula over and over again. I guess Robbie Williams was on
to something when he said that Noel Gallagher has run out of other people's
ideas...Anyway, here I go dumping it on a band that, after all, has a lot of quality in
their music - but also a band you should expect so much more from.
