The Hotlist What's hot right now!

THE HOT AND NOT LIST as of November 4th 1998

Le Mec:

Hotlist

  • Finally, fifteen of U2's B-Sides are available together on CD. Unfortunately, it is as a limited edition only available together with their Best Of album. But I guess that's the way the game is. The poor record companies have to make money too....If you don't own the original U2 albums it's a great package, though.
  • The new video "Rabbit In Your Headlights" by Unkle with Thom Yorke on vocals. It's really weird and rough and I totally dig the mental state of the mind that lies behind the video. Now , that's art!
  • If you don't already have the singles, you should invest in Oasis' new B-Sides album "The Masterplan". It has some good stuff on it - even though some of the best B-Sides have been left out. Especially some of the tracks from the "Stand By Me" single.
  • The new single "Outside" by George Michael. Getting caught in strange places with his hands in even stranger places hasn't weakened his ability to write great pop tunes. What can I say? The man's got class.
  • I wonder when they'll pull "Last Christmas" out of the closet (so to speak) this year. It's a great Xmas ballad and it brings forth a bunch of memories every year. Call me a sentimental sucker, but that song gets to me every time - at least these two months every winter.
  • On November 14th it's time for yet another record fair where I live. This takes place twice a year and it's always a good opportunity to find cheap CD's or bootlegs - if you're into that stuff. For any interested Danes out there, it takes place in Aarhus at: Folkedansens Hus, Vestervang 42, kl. 11-16.

Notlist

  • Ibens - a Danish "boyband". I like minimalistic sentimental foolish music, but this is taking it a step too far. I don't like his thin voice and it all appears too melancholic and wimpy to me. A less nerdy appearance could have done it.
  • Des'ree: "Life". Absolutely the worst song around at the moment. This continuous chorus celebrating life gets on my nerves. So give me an artist full of self pity any day!
  • Even before listening to her new album, I'm fed up with the sound of Alanis Morissette. I actually do like her music, but the ocean of angry female artists since her debut has spoiled a lot for Alanis. We are past those days now and it will be difficult for her to get even remotely close to the success she has had so far. Then again, I don't think she would want to. Anyway, this may be a momentary phenomenon for me, but I don't think her new album will ever get past being just an ordinary release by me. I have too many mixed emoitions about the musical genre.
  • Dire Straits: "Sultans Of Swing - The Very Best Of". Without adding a single new recording, the record company is squeezing the market for every last drop. Unfortunately, the time around Xmas is filled with releases like this. It's a strange thing: every Fall, the look in record people's eyes changes and is taken over by a big fat dollar sign ($$$!!!!!!!!!).
  • How little it takes for a video to be banned in the US (and the UK for that matter). I mean, how special are nipples or the word "fuck" these days. Give the people some credit for thinking themselves. Get past it, you demons of morality and let's move on with this life in sin!
  • For the second week in a row, Mike Horse's Hot & Not list is completely awful and filled with uninteresting, boring stuff. One more and he's out!!

  • I only have one problem with R.E.M.'s new album "Up": I can't figure out which song is my favourite one - they're all great.
  • I've got high hopes for Alanis Morissette's "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" since her first single "Thank U" makes me tick.
  • I'm beginning to like Lenny Kravitz's new songs from his album "5" (check out "I Believe In You").
  • I recently got a "New Country" compilation-CD for free when buying a regular CD.
  • I haven't been spending a lot of money on CD's lately.

Notlist

  • I missed R.E.M.'s Hamburg concert on the radio since I don't own a radio - darn!
  • The same goes for the K's Choice concert broadcasted a few weeks ago.
  • I'm afraid my mother-in-law is gonna give me a terrible CD for Christmas (but then again I can always pass it on to Le Mec since I know it would fit perfectly into his pathetic collection.
  • Well, I recently got a "New Counry" compilation CD, but there ain't no Shania Twain songs on it.
  • Compilation CD's can be quite good but stop putting "fancy" remixes on instead of the regular radio station version. I mean, that's how and why we like them.
  • I don't have any money to spend on new CD's for my collection.

  • Danish Radio P3 has been featuring several good live recordings lately with P.J.Harvey, K's Choise, Sonic Youth and R.E.M among others. So keep an eye on the radio program !
  • The title of Alanis Morrisette's new record "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" It's so "Generation X", so brilliant. I haven't heard the record itself so I can't comment on that yet.
  • R.E.M.: "Up":
Having proved that they master the rock-type album to perfection on their former release "New Adventures in Hi-Fi", R.E.M. have taken the opportunity of drummer Bill Berry's good-bye, to create a whole new sound. As Michael Stipe himself have put it, it is like R.E.M. have skipped the next two albums in their evolution as a band and have gone directly to the third "post-Berry" album. It is unmistakably R.E.M., but still a radical reinvention of the band, which is almost equal to U2's "Achtung Baby" surprise. The reinvention will not, however, win back the 50% of their audience that didn't get hooked on "New Adventures".
Up is dark, quiet, slow and totally lacks the obvious single-hit potential, which could place it firmly in the charts. It's an album which holds incredible richness in its structures and many layers of sound that has been the result of experimenting away from the traditional four-piece rock-band formation. "Atmospheric" is a word I have come across in a review of the album, and I think it describes the album quite well. Intense and deep songs with an honesty which is also apparent in the fact the lyrics are printed in the booklet, for the first time ever in R.E.M.'s history.
They never were crowd pleasers in their approach to music, and thank God, but for those who still hang on, R.E.M. have made an album which will take an important place in modern music and will intrigue and reward the listener for years to come. Personally I am grateful that R.E.M. is still around and are able to give me a whole new continent to explore each time they make a new album.

Notlist

  • The Danish act Souvenirs. Aqua for grown-ups?
  • That I haven't had time to check out MTV's Alternative Nation lately. A fact that is going to change.
