PJ
Harvey: "Stories From
The City, Stories From The Sea". I've never been able to really find peace of mind in
PJ Harvey's universe. She's always been just a little bit too strange for me. But with
this new album she has really struck a note that really appeals to me. Gone are the angry
musical upsets and the weird songs, and left is an album filled with great female rock of
a very consistant quality. No bad songs here and one of the most positive surprises this
year for me.
Supergrass: With their third, self-entitled album they
charge on in search of the most beautiful weird pop song. This isn't exactly award winning
stuff but I still have a soft spot for these blokes. And as they mature as musicians the
spot softens even more...
Aimee
Mann. I watched the movie
"Magnolia" with a handful of very personal songs of hers and it really struck me
how great her songs actually are when it comes to building that very special mood of
atmosphere and bittersweet longing in a movie. She's been a little bit forgotten in my
book but she certainly came back full speed!
This is a bit of a cliché but I still find it rather nice when the Xmas month arrives
and serves up the best part of all the Xmas songs out there. Now all we need is the snow...
Notlist
- Mark Knoptler more or less officially announcing in an interview that there
won't be anohter Dire Straits
album. I mean, I guess we
all knew this between the lines but there's still a feeling of loss with this statement
being out there...
Karen. Danish R&B singer. Well, I'm not a very
big fan of the genre and this honourable but destined to go wrong attempt to do it in
Danish certainly doesn't move anything in the right direction for me. And what's up with
the ridiculous amount of R&B songs in the charts these days. When did the world become
such a soft place...?
Oasis: "Familiar To Millions". I never
thought they were any good as a live band and really can't see why the world needs this
live performance. And even as a double album! I've kind of really lost patience with Oasis
- even though they still figure on the list of my favourite artists - and Liam has got to
be the biggest half-brain out there....!
