Why This
Album Is So Great:
This is the album that made Coldplay superstars. However, they weren't at the time the
album was released and it can be heard. The album sparkles with hunger, creativity and
melodic grandeur without ever becoming over the top. This album was made under the
pressure of expectation but never sounds crippled by it. Some of Coldplay's later stuff
does have that tendency and suffers from "having-to-be-as-big-as-U2-syndrome".
Chris Martin hasn't got the greatest of voices but it works well both when it's embraced
by sonic guitar sounds and when it's left naked with only limited instrumentation. It
plays like an album and although there were several singles taken from it, the album
really belongs together as a whole were an incredibly high musical level is kept from
start to finish.
Overall Rating (on a scale from 1 to 10): 9
